The Catcher

A painting of a close up view of a baseball player in a catcher's mask

A black and white photocopy

48 x 24 acrylic on canvas

This painting was one of my favorite challenges. I wanted to surprise my brother with a painting of his days as a catcher for the UC Davis baseball team, and I remembered a shot that he loved that could be my source material. Unfortunately, my brother’s wife only had a black and white photocopy of the original newspaper image. I was able to track down the photographer, but it had been 15 years since the photo was taken and he could not locate the original. I took a look at the photocopy and decided to press forward. I used some other photos for color reference and threw a golden background behind him (UC Davis’s Colors are blue and gold). Given the challenges I think the piece worked out pretty well and my brother was stoked.
